Research in Switzerland: The communitiy of Wartau-Gretschins is situated in the St.Gallen Rhine valley, few miles north of Sarans. The reformed parish of Wartau also includes the villages and hamlets Gretschins with hamlet Tobel, Oberschan, Malans, Fontnas, Weite (Scherm, Oberau, Hinterweite, Hohlweg), Murris with hamlet Plattis; further the Walser colonies Matug, am Berg (nowadays Walserberg) with Alp Palfrys - not inhabited any longer; finally the villages of Azmoos and Trübbach (in the tennis world known as home of Martina Hingis) : these two villages constitute the independent parish of Azmoos since 1736. The Hanselmanns came from the hamlet of Oberschan and there are church records of Hanselmanns from 1610-1875.
According to official records in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Heinrich and Margareth Hanselmann immigrated to America in the Spring of 1865 with their two sons, Heinrich and Mathias. When the family arrived in America, it is assumed they dropped the double "n" from their last name.
