General Notes:
Robert Patterson was from Ireland and in 1768 settled at Philadelphia. He was principal of Wilmington Academy in Deleware, professor of mathematics and vice provost of the University of Pennsylvania. Robert was founder of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, President of the American Sphilosophy Society, and Director U.S. Mint. He published books on mathematics, navigation, philosophy, astronomy, etc. He was also a brigader-major during the American Revolution. He was a military instructor of the Associators of Delaware in 1775. He was in the battles of Long Island and White Plains, and served in the field under Col. Silas Newcomb until 1779, when he was elected professor of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, which chair he occupied for thirty-five years. 39
