General Notes:
Thomas was the eldest son of Maskell and Mary Ewing. He and his uncle James took part in burning a cargo of British tea, which landed at Greenwich, New Jersey. When the Revolution was on in earnest, Thomas, who had studied medicine and surgery, was appointed surgeon of a brigade in the lower New Jersey counties. He was at the same time appointed by the legislature, and commissioned by the governor as Major of the second Battalion of the Cumberland regiment. In this capacity he joined the army. He was in many engagements. In the course of the war he made the acquaintance of the officers of a British ship of war and received from its surgeon a present of a case of pocket instruments. This case and instruments were passed to his great grandson, Charles Ewing of Greenwich, NJ and were highly prized. Thomas married Sarah Fithian, a granddaughter, on the maternal side of Thomas Maskell I. 48
