General Notes:
Carl graduated from Male High School in Louisville, KY, and the Spencerian Business College also in Louisville. He came to Cannelton after graduation to work at Lehman's Company of America in 1922 as a bookkeeper. After several years, he was made office manager and held that position when the company burned to the ground in November of 1946. The Company ceased to exist after that time. Carl became manager of Cannelton Utilities and under his leadership, the city was given modern street lighting. He was also there when expansion was necessary to furnish power to the Cannelton Locks and Dam. He retired from the Utilities in 1964 to operate his own accounting business. He was appointed to the Indiana State Toll Bridge Commision by Governor Gates and Schricker and as secretary of that body, helped arrange plans for the Wabash Memorial Bridge at Mt. Vernon.
Carl was a charter member of the Cannelton Kiwanis Club and was for years that organization's treasurer. At the time of his death, he was president of the Citizens Building and Loan Association, a firm he had served as a board member for many years.
Those who knew Carl but slightly did not realize the warmth of his nature. For his serious look and sometimes droll expressions were but a veneer to hide a truly good heart. His crowning passions were children and pets. He was completely kid to both. This was shown in a thousand ways by his acts of kindness to the neighboring Powers children, whom he virtually "adopted.", and the way he would always come forward when children were concerned was an inspiration. For years, Cannelton Boy Scouts have been seeing the Shrine Circus at Evansville at the expense of Carl Knapp. The last picture ever taken of Carl was at the time he sponsored Cannelton's Girl Scouts at a meeting of the Kiwanis Club so the community would better know their goals and programs.
As he attracted children, he also drew pets and many a stray animal found a home and a place to eat at the Knapps.
